A Relaxing Food Evening

January 12th, 2008

What could be better than an evening that ends in hot 包子 (baozi, steamed chinese dumplings), fresh raw garlic, and hot rose tea? Quite a few things for sure, but this night, it really just hit the spot. The 包子 was very fresh. The garlic burns my mouth, and makes fire in my stomach. The tea quiets the taste down to a simmer, and it just feels wonderful.

Skyler, Born September 12, 2007

September 25th, 2007

As Bing used to say, “It’s been a long, long, time.” I haven’t updated this supposed-blog in… Well, about ten months! Rest assured though, these ten months haven’t been without events. As the title suggests, our son, Skyler, was born on September 12, 2007 to two happy parents. He weighed in at eight pounds, two ounces. There is a lot that I need to write about, if I’m going to keep this site going, but at this moment, this short paragraph will have to do. If you would like to see some photos of Skyler, check out my flickr photopage. I also have a movie up here.

Being a father is just the most amazing thing I have or will ever do, I’m certain. And I just can’t do justice to this experience in a description here on the web. For those of you that are coming upon this news for the first time, I can understand your frustration in my lack of communication. I hope, once the dust settles, that we can talk again.

Students do nothing as fellow student is unjustly tasered.

November 21st, 2006

While everyone on the internet is quick to point out the rather obvious abuses of power showcased in a recently you-tube’d video of police brutality, there is a shocking absence of criticism towards the students that stood by watching. Read the rest of this entry »

UltraSparc with 9 Ethernet Ports

November 6th, 2006

Yes. 9 Ethernet ports. You know you want it.

Out of pure boredom, I was wondering around at a local goodwill store and came across a Sun Microsystems UltraSparc 1 Creator. For those of you that aren’t familiar with these boxes, they’re pizza-box shaped unix computers built in the mid-90s to run Solaris. The box was only $12, so I went ahead and picked it up.

Why Amazon’s Unbox download movie service will fail

September 8th, 2006

If you haven’t noticed yet, amazon.com just began offering downloadable video content. It’s a pay service, and you can either pay to ‘rent’, or pay to ‘own’. Sounds good on the surface — presumably flexible, convenient, and easy to use, right? But let’s look at the depth of this amazing offer.

Mac OS X: re-opened

August 9th, 2006

Hot on the heals of WWDC 2006, Apple recently announced the publishing of Mac OS X’s kernel, xnu, in open-source. The download includes sources for PowerPC as well as Intel builds, and EFI-releated code. Apple is also opening a new forum for open-source collaboration (powered by WordPress, ironically). Additionally, Apple will also be hosting newly re-licensed (from APSL to Apache) source code for an iCal Server, launchd (startup and daemon control for Mac OS X (and FreeBSD?)) as well as Bonjour. Apple’s new open-source web site is called Mac OS Forge. Read the rest of this entry »

LPD: Rumors dispelled

Do you have a router or server running a unix-like system (BSD, linux, etc)? Would you like clients on your network to be able to print to an attached printer? Are you confused about how to set this up with LPD? Read the rest of this entry »

The Evil Chicken

June 11th, 2006

Mandy was cooking some chicken in the Black & Decker Toast-R-Oven/Broiler today, and the grease got a little excited. My sister walked in to the kitchen and noticed the flames jumping out the back of the toaster. “Something might be wrong here,” she said. We threw the toaster out the door, and doused the flames with pancake mix and water. This is the second Black and Decker toaster oven I’ve owned that went down in flames. Had nobody noticed the flames, the place would have been ablaze in about a minute. Read on for pictures.

Lawyers ordered to play Rock Paper Scissors.

June 7th, 2006

Two lawyers in an insurance case were unable to agree on simple details such as scheduling depositions. The judge, who was tired of hearing the bickering (can you imagine how ridiculous a lawyer representing an insurance company must be..) ordered the two to play Rock Paper Scissors. Wow. Story at cnn.com.
